    Work Statement:

My work is a constant exploration of the fluidity of existence, social expectations, intimacy and identity, challenging the boundaries of materiality and perception while exploring the physical and emotional aspects of the human experience. I work in a range of mediums: photography, video, installation, as well as performance; incorporating elements of irony, humor, and discomfort to challenge perceptions.

In my work, the visible tension between the materials, and the fragility mirrors the often unseen tensions in our personal and societal constructs. I encourage viewers to reconsider their perspectives on normalcy and the cultural constructs that shape identity, emphasizing the value of observing the world with empathy and curiosity.

With a profound cultural understanding of the nuances of identity, my work delves into the interplay between the tangible and the intangible, prompts reflection on personal and collective, both the complexities and the universal aspects of human life, particularly through the lens of gender. I think a lot of equilibrium, duality and tension in my work, inviting the viewers to reflect on the precariousness of human existence and explore how societal constructs and expectations shape our understanding of the world. Within the work, I have questions that include the exploration of the human struggle against societal expectations and the fluid nature of identity.

    Absent Gallery

    Absent Gallery:

How would you describe your creative state?

    Keke:

My current creative state can be described as one of constant exploration and growth. As I am still in the graduate photography program at Parsons School of Design, I have to share my progress with my professors almost every week, and this timeline has pushed me to keep thinking of new ideas and experimenting with new shots.

My creative process usually stems from observing my surroundings in my daily life, especially those objects or items that pique my interest. Once inspiration strikes, I begin to think about how to translate these ideas into a concrete art form, be it a performative video or a photographic work. Based on my personal exploration of gender and mobility, I then take this personal, internal exploration and try to convey this perspective through my artwork. Throughout this process, I have continually challenged and redefined my understanding of gender, identity and mobility, and these themes have taken centre stage in my work.

    Absent Gallery:

What factors have influenced your creation?

    Keke:

In fact, my creative process is still very relaxed, and most of my inspirations come from the exhibitions I've seen recently, the books I've read, the pictures I've looked at on the internet, and even the accidental interesting things I suddenly see when I'm walking on the street may inspire me.

    Absent Gallery:

What are your upcoming plans or expectations for the artwork?

    Keke:

This latest body of work done recently is a collection of photographs, videos and installations that challenge conventional ideas and expectations by incorporating elements of irony, humour and discomfort. I intend to continue along this path, with new thoughts and creations to further enrich and deepen this series.

I expect that I will continue to explore and challenge definitions of 'normalcy', particularly in relation to gender, identity and cultural constructs. Through my work, I hope to stimulate deeper thinking about identity and the construction of "normalcy" in culture. This is not only to inspire the audience, but also to explore and expand my personal perception of the world.

At the same time, I hope that my works can reach a wider audience, whether through gallery exhibitions, art festivals, or sharing through digital platforms. I hope that my art can become a medium to spark dialogue and discussion, not only within the art world, but also to reach a wider range of people with different backgrounds and interests.
