    Work Statement:

    Are we yellow vessels?

Jingyi Li’s work, The Yellow Vessel features silk sculptures constructed to evoke the form of the Yellow woman and encourages the audience to reflect on how East Asian female are viewed culturally, though the male gaze, the Imperial gaze and how asian females may see themselves as a result of this cultural baggage. She mimics the form of East Asian vessels in her work, emphasizing their similarity to the female body.

The work reflects the development of her feminist consciousness where her own lived experience ran parallel to her changing interpretation of traditional Chinese art forms. The work deliberately exaggerates these conventions, in order deconstruct them, for the audience. This highlights how culture can colonize, materialialise and fetishise the female body.

    Absent Gallery:

How would you describe your creative state??

    Jingyi:

I feel that while I am an artist, I am also a craftsman, and the constant exploration of craftsmanship and materials is a very important part of my creations.

    Absent Gallery:

What factors have influenced your creation?

    Jingyi:

Feminism and East Asian Studies are the main topics explored in my work. Take my work "The Yellow Vessel - Patriarchy, Orientalism and Introspection" as an example, this work invites the viewer to reflect on how culturally East Asian women are viewed through the male gaze, through a Western lens: and how Asian women see themselves as a result of this cultural baggage. Whereas the Hidden Drawer series expresses my subjective appreciation of everyday eroticism, my identity and life is the root of the creation.

I want my work to be timeless and eternal.

    Absent Gallery:

Describe in one word your feelings or expectations as an artist about the current creative environment.

    Jingyi:

Sprouting is how I feel about the current environment, and even though it's a tough environment, the fact that more and more women artists are growing up is a particularly good thing, I think.
