Wanyu Ren
This work is based on a 1-minute video of the flowing river to create an attempt to contemplate the essence of natural change. For Ren, the entire creative process is a meditation and a re-description of the river's ephemeral and ever-changing mobility. This one minute is extended infinitely, magnified, she repeatedly put myself in the change and record my feeling. Gradually, she cease to ponder the reasons behind each change, shifting her focus to the change itself.
Ren divided the original video into 60 frames, each of which represented a musical bar on the sheet. She intuitively play the piano keys to mark the corresponding notes on each image. Subsequently, she looped the video sound from that particular frame, drawing on the images to capture the psychological and auditory impressions by referencing the symbols in the musical score. Through this process, Ren created a visualized sheet. After, she collaborated with a musician who took the visualized score she provided and expertly transcribed it into a tangible musical score. It was unexpected to see how closely the generated melody matched the rhythm of the ambient music in the original footage.

Wanyu Ren (b.2000) is an multidisciplinary artist graduated from printmaking at the Royal College of Art. She was awarded the 2021Hiiiillustration Merit Award and the 2020iJungle illustration Merit award in the book category, and won the Outstanding Graduate Design Award in 2022.
As an multidisciplinary artist with a background in environmental design, influenced by Zen philosophy and the study of spatial narrative, her creative work revolves around observing the changes in nature and the neglected traces in life. And through printmaking, painting and photography, she records her meditative experience from these visual events as a process of recognising the inner nature of natural changes and reconnecting with her inner self.
She specialises in depicting changes in nature as a metaphor for the imperceptible, peaceful and comfortable relationship between people and things. This relationship symbolises a harmonious, natural flow of beautiful opportunities into life. Using paintings or conceptual installations as a vehicle, she uses serenity and subtlety to evoke an awareness of the present moment, allowing the viewer to briefly take a break from busyness and flow with the changes in nature.
Exhibition (selected)
