    Together

    Ying Xue 薛萤

    Sculpture, Ceramics 雕塑 陶瓷

    22 x 25 cm

    2019

The prototype of the teapot in the Together series comes from an old teapot used by the artist's mother, inspired by her research on the local handmade crafts during her residency in Jingdezhen in 2018 and replicated the image with the local handmade ceramic inverted film and grouting production technique. The ceramic grouting process is accomplished by physically deconstructing and reassembling the negative form after turning the mold twice, and in the process of repeated dismemberment and recombination the artist unfolds a narrative and exploration of the interior of the teapot as a metaphor for the role of power in the household. The teapot series consists of twelve symbiotic images with different structural approaches. In the technical process of inverting the mold, which emphasizes consistency and unity of image, the artist attempts to gradually reveal the situation of women in the non-mainstream patriarchal knowledge structure, and the internalized repression and deformed body passed on from one generation to the next.

    Light Up Faraway Mountain 点亮远山

    Ding Ling 丁澪

Video, Performance, Film and Archive 行为, 影像与档案

    40' 00''

    2024

Light Up Faraway Mountain is inspired by the artist's experience of life, death and hope. This project explores futility, absurdity, and uncertainty through research of performance, public installation and art intervention in natural spaces, using experimental fifilm and documentary archives to express the process of attempting, and hopefully pass on to those in the doldrums the hope that is still to be pursued in the depths of despair. It represents the light and hope in the distance, to realize the meaning of life across the difficulties.

    What Remains

Vague is a poetic expression of the uncertainty of memory. Like a blurred photograph, memory exists in a state of flux between clarity and blurriness. And forgetting is a double-edged sword, both painful and healing. It can embellish painful memories, making them softer and more acceptable, and here the two-dimensional nature of memory is explored.

This work explores the uncertainty of memory, using ice as an alternative way of presenting glass. They are similar in substance, with transparent and fragile qualities and the same ambiguity, together showing the changes in time and space. In this work, everything becomes transient and fluid.

The passage of time is shown in the gradual melting of the ice, symbolising the change of memory. Just as glass can reflect images, ice can change through light during the melting process, showing the change of memory space at another time. Between the passage of time and stillness, the present and the past, the internal and the external are connected, and together they explore the fragility of the memory of Alzheimer's disease patients and the passing of time.

    River's Song

    Wanyu Ren 任琬玉

Digital print, Drawing, Artist Book, Video 数码印刷、绘画、手工书、影像

    2023

This work is based on a 1-minute video of the flowing river to create an attempt to contemplate the essence of natural change. For Ren, the entire creative process is a meditation and a re-description of the river's ephemeral and ever-changing mobility. This one minute is extended infinitely, magnified, she repeatedly put myself in the change and record my feeling. Gradually, she cease to ponder the reasons behind each change, shifting her focus to the change itself.

Ren divided the original video into 60 frames, each of which represented a musical bar on the sheet. She intuitively play the piano keys to mark the corresponding notes on each image. Subsequently, she looped the video sound from that particular frame, drawing on the images to capture the psychological and auditory impressions by referencing the symbols in the musical score. Through this process, Ren created a visualized sheet. After, she collaborated with a musician who took the visualized score she provided and expertly transcribed it into a tangible musical score. It was unexpected to see how closely the generated melody matched the rhythm of the ambient music in the original footage.

    What is Sound?

This question has been lingering in my mind for years, but I have never been able to describe it accurately.

As a disabled person with hearing impairment, I have never been able to fully understand and perceive the real, or so-called normal sound. My behavior and reaction are slow, and the world is fast.

I am trying to analyze and understand this real world, but I can't quickly receive their own information. This is an intermittent, delayed, huge isolation and loneliness.

Since August 2023, I have experienced a painful and sudden hearing loss,or called: sudden deafness. This is the first time since I can remember that I can't hear any sound for about two months. During this period, the sound is far away, and it can only reach to me after my two-month journey with the recording.

I rarely tell others how I feel, how I reckon sound. But it is time to discuss who am l, how is my sound.

    Farewell 再见

    Judith Fang 方芊

    Video 影像 1' 39"

    2023

Water of lake michigan on Dec.31 2021

Water of Lake Michigan at the last sunrise of 2021

Before Judith left Chicago, she went to see the very last sunrise of 2021. She collected some water from lake Michigan and froze it into a ring for her finger. Let it melts, and drips fade away, like the moment she used to collect it. Turned into a nameless wisp of water vapor in the air.

This piece is a reflection of Judith's helplessness and regret during the epidemic as her memories faded into the earth. As the icy rings of Lake Michigan melted and flowed through her fingers, she couldn't stop the tears from falling. In the moment when the tears and the lake water met and evaporated together, she had the epiphany that all that rises will eventually converge, just as goodbyes to all manifestations in the world are only temporary. Farewell: meaning we will meet again.

L’anima diventa così natura, tempo e divenire is a series of works, of images that are beyond the very process of creation, and yet, manifesting themselves in the present and in abrasions, they cannot fully incarnate; they remain on the threshold of recognition and intuition, and will never become actual entities. It is a fusion between the slow moment of spiritual white light, as previously mentioned, with the figure to be able to experience the present, and even to mutually contaminate each other: the everyday of a deep and silent spirituality, thus the spirituality of a less esoteric, closed, and mysterious language.

The following works are related to the water surface, the wind blowing the water surface to form ripples and changing shadows, which brings a sense of serenity and depth. “One can get a lot out of a river” Seeing the meaning of life through water, watching it flow, breathe, roar, calm and contain. It has always been felt that life is similar to water, flowing through the unknown, sometimes calm, sometimes rushing, sometimes mapping the darkness; sometimes flooded with starlight ......

For fluids, the temporal dimension is more meaningful than the spatial dimension because fluids are constantly flowing or permeable, they are not bound by space and geography, and are more attentive to time and speed.

Alain Badiou sees painting as a kind of ‘seeming’, which is similar to ‘fate’ (缘) in the oriental context, an uncommitted emotional connection or encounter without commitment at different times, spaces or places, where there are gaps between and among various things that are able to activate an energy field which in turn manifests the qualities of nothingness. By observing and capturing fleeting moments, this series of paintings recapitulates the experience of nature, validating the fluidity of consciousness and the sensations between the body and the mind, a rethinking of the intimate experience, a disembodied view of the cosmos.
